Residents living near the Ottawa Hospital’s new campus may hear construction noise overnight for the next two weeks as crews work on a new water main and the parking garage above the O-Train Line 2 track. Work continues on the new parking garage near the corner of Carling Avenue and Preston Street as part of preparations for the new Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus. The parking garage will have approximately 2,900 parking spaces.

The City of Ottawa says Bylaw and Regulatory Services has issued a noise exempt permit for the construction work at the new Ottawa Hospital campus from July 17 to 28. “As part of the conditions related to the permit, construction noise may not exceed 85 dBA,” Tania McCumber, acting chief of Bylaw and Regulatory Services, said in an email to CTV News Ottawa. “As part of the conditions of the noise exemption permit, public notification is required to nearby residents prior to any overnight work.”

The Ottawa Hospital says the planned work includes overnight work required for the construction of a water main at Carling and Sherwood avenues until July 24, and overnight work above the O-Train Line 2 track on the upper levels of the parking garage until July 31. Officials say the work above the LRT track must be completed when O-Train Line 2 is out of service. “Construction crews at the site of The Ottawa Hospital’s new campus complete as much work as they can during daytime hours to minimize disruption to the community,” a hospital spokesperson told CTV News Ottawa.

“Some work on the site is necessary in early mornings, evenings, overnight and on weekends, including time-sensitive work and maintenance of critical equipment and water pumps.” The hospital says it will ask for the bylaw exemption permit to be renewed if required. “The crews follow City of Ottawa regulations and try to limit noise when work is required,” the spokesperson said.
