A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the Calgary area and throughout central and eastern Alberta late Wednesday morning.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the Calgary area and throughout central and eastern Alberta late Wednesday morning. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) posted the notice just after 10:30 a.m. “Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” ECCC posted.

“Severe thunderstorms will develop in the area this afternoon and evening. The threat of severe thunderstorms will continue into the overnight hours over central and eastern Alberta. “Some severe thunderstorms may produce tornadoes,” it added.

“Local utility outages are possible. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible.” Wednesday’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud, with a 60 per cent chance of showers and risk of a severe thunderstorm with a forecast high of 27 degrees.
