asmith@medicinehatnews.com After learning a bit about the greatest party on dirt, country music hitmaker Phil Vassar questioned how he had never made his way out to Quonset Days before. With nine albums, two ASCAP Songwriter of the Year awards, and recognition as ACM’s Top New Male Vocalist, Vassar has a long history within the musical industry under his belt.

His songwriting credit can also be found with some of the giants of the genre, such as Tim McGraw’s “My Next Thirty Years” and Collin Raye’s “Little Red Rodeo.” And now, fresh off of touring with Old Dominion across Canada, Vassar is bringing that deep love of country music right to Quonset Days on July 18, held just west of Medicine Hat near Seven Persons. “I’m glad to be doing it.

I’m excited, and we’re just gonna rock the house,” said Vassar. “I live for live performances, they’re my favourite. I have to do records, and we’ve had a lot of hits and all that.

But man, the payoff is getting to play them live.” Fans can expect many of Vassar’s hits, alongside pieces from his latest project which includes covers and recuts of some of the songs which have shaped and inspired his career along the way and possibly taking a few requests along the way. “I’ve always wanted to do kind of an homage to some of my heroes like Elton John, Billy Joel, and Lionel Ritchie,” said Vassar.

“It’s kind of a cool thing, to get to do this, to just stay home and record songs whenever I want.” Among recent tracks to be proud of includes his deeply personal new single, “What It Means,” which was inspired by his near-fatal heart attack and subsequent stroke. Dying and being resuscitated twice, said Vassar, offered a very real new perspective.

“I’m just blessed to be back out on the road playing,” said Vassar. He adds he is looking forward to making his way out to the Biemans family ranch for Quonset Days, and “as long as we get to play our songs and have fun with you guys, I’m happy.” The full lineup for 2026 Quonset Days includes Tenille Townes headlining July 17, with Aaron Goodvin, Alli Walker and Chevelle 454.

On the Saturday, party-goers can look forward to Montgomery Gentry and Vassar as headliners, with Phoenix and Fox & The Hounds opening. 14 -13
