Palestinian Action Salt Spring (PASS) is hosting a renowned Palestinian chef and storyteller at a Monday, July 20 event at Beaver Point Hall. Celebration of Palestinian Resilience: Food and Stories with Chef Izzeldin Bukhari, features the Sacred Cuisine chef as part of his Canadian tour, offering a multi-course vegetarian/vegan meal at the hall, beginning at 6 p.m., with doors open at 5 p.m. According to the Sacred Cuisine website , the organization’s mission is “to share the ancestral wisdom embedded in Palestinian culinary traditions, emphasizing our historic connections between food, land, and identity.

We believe in the power of food to foster community, understanding, and healing, drawing inspiration from Sufi principles where sharing meals is an act of profound love and worship – thus, Sacred Cuisine. Through our experiences, we aim to highlight the resilience and cultural richness of Palestine.” At Bukhari’s events, which routinely sell out, he shares stories about the dishes’ ingredients, their history and how they reflect Palestinian culture.

PASS said he will also describe his family ties and childhood experiences in Gaza with his grandmother and extended family, and how food relates to cultural resistance. Another event in support of Palestinian people runs two days earlier as local PASS members are welcomed by the Salt Spring Island United Church’s social justice committee in its Getting to Know Our Neighbours series on Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m. (Doors open at 1:30 p.m.)

The church’s guests will speak about the Apartheid-free Communities movement.
