Crews battled a three-alarm fire at an industrial bakery in Etobicoke on Thursday afternoon that started in an oven and spread to the roof. Thick black smoke was seen billowing out of the building near Carlingview Drive and Attwell Drive. Toronto Fire Services Division Commander Robert Hewson said an employee called 911 at 4:15 p.m. for an oven on fire.

Crews encountered heavy smoke and flames upon arrival, Hewson said. “We did make interior entry, and there was flame around an oven, which was proceeding up into the roof area. We went out of the building.

We set up aerial operations on the roof,” he said. Images from the scene show firefighters on aerial ladders spraying water on the roof of the building. About 50 staff who were working at the time were able to get out of the building, Hewson said.

No injuries were reported. Hewson said the main body of the fire had been knocked down, and crews are now working to put out spot fires. “We’ll continue to fight the fire on the roof.

I would imagine it’ll be our protocol of a firewatch for at least 24 hours after,” he added. The cause, origin, and circumstances of the fire are unknown. Hewson said the operation was challenging given the heat and the poor air quality.

“We do concentrate on watching our crews and cycling them, just to keep those work cycles lower and keep everybody healthy,” he said.
