Northern Ontario Motorcyclist died while fundraising for charity

The mayor of Shuniah has reached out to offer condolences to everyone impacted by Saturday's fatal motorcycle collision.

THUNDER BAY — The Sault Ste. Marie resident who suffered fatal injuries in a collision on Highway 11/17 in Shuniah on Saturday died while participating in a motorcycle ride for charity. The 58-year-old woman was among a group of riders taking part in the 1000 Mile Ride in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

The fundraiser was to take them from Sudbury to the Terry Fox Monument before returning to Sault Ste. Marie. OPP, who have not released the identify of the deceased, said two other riders were injured in a collision involving three motorcycles near the Highway 527 intersection. A message on the fundraiser's social media page expresses gratitude to all who have "reached out with support, kind words and messages during this incredibly difficult and tragic time."

The post also asks people to avoid spreading rumours or speculation about the incident. "Please keep the families and loved ones affected in your thoughts, and allow them the privacy, respect and compassion they deserve during this heartbreaking time," it states. Shuniah Mayor Wendy Landry responded to the message by offering her sympathies and condolences.

"As a former rider, wife of a rider, mother of a rider and daughter of lifetime riders, I send my personal heartbreak for you all and to all riders, we always pray for safe rides. I pray for your healing and your journeys. Much respect."

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada provided a statement Monday saying it was deeply saddened to learn of the tragedy, the loss of life and the injuries that resulted. "The 1000 Mile Ride brings together a deeply committed community of riders and supporters who have shown extraordinary generosity in support of people affected by blood cancer," it said. "Today, our focus is entirely on those impacted by this heartbreaking loss."

An OPP spokesperson said the circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.
