New exhibit in Lake Country explores family and connection Mother-daughter exhibition A new mother-daughter exhibition featuring artists Amber Powell and Cassia Powell opens this week at the Lake Country Art Gallery. Notions of Gathering runs from July 11 to Aug. 23 and features mixed-media drawings, textiles, collage and installation work. The exhibition explores the relationships people form with objects, memories and each other, inviting visitors to think about gathering as both an act of collecting and a way of creating connection.

"What are the things we hold on to that are passed down? How can we cast these associations into spaces of potential?" the artists ask.

According to the gallery, the exhibition draws on storytelling and personal and spiritual folklore while exploring what it means to create, inherit and collect objects over time. Visitors will also find an exploration of traditional family dynamics and the meaning of kinship, "looking at gathering as an act of collecting, but also as a means of coming together." Amber Powell graduated from the University of Victoria in 1991 with a bachelor of fine arts, specializing in printmaking before going on to work in professional collections management.

Cassia Powell earned her bachelor of fine arts from the University of Victoria in 2020, focusing on extended painting and installation, and is currently completing a master of fine arts at the University of British Columbia. An opening reception will be held Saturday, July 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lake Country Art Gallery.
