Man died after collapsing during arrest in SE Calgary, ASIRT says Posted Jul 16, 2026 12:01 pm. Last Updated Jul 16, 2026 12:02 pm. A man died over the weekend after collapsing during an arrest in southeast Calgary, according to Alberta’s police watchdog.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says police were called to a home in the Abbeydale community around 9 p.m. on Saturday for reports of a man entering yards and acting erratically. Shortly before 9:30 p.m., officers were told the same man had gone into a home in the area and tried to stab someone inside. Officers found a man believed to be connected to the calls a few minutes later elsewhere in the neighbourhood.

ASIRT says police used a conducted‐energy weapon during the arrest. The man fell into a narrow space between a garage and a fence before officers were able to take him into custody. Police moved the man into a nearby yard to assess him.

The man was conscious, speaking, and briefly resisted the handcuffs, according to ASIRT. He became unresponsive a short time later. Officers began CPR until paramedics arrived and took him to hospital, where he died.

ASIRT has taken over investigation of the incident and is looking to the police use of force and circumstances surrounding the man’s death. The police watchdog looks into any cases involving serious injury or death, or significant concerns about an officer’s actions.
