Local drivers continue early-season dominance at Cape Breton Dragway

Like the first race weekend of the season last month, local drivers continued to showcase their talent on the track with more dominance at Cape Breton Dragway in Sydney last weekend. Like the first race weekend of the season last month, local drivers continued to showcase their talent on the track with more dominance at Cape Breton Dragway in Sydney last weekend. On Sunday, Shaun Hillier of Glace Bay won the pro class, followed by Glen Cooke of Gardiner Mines, and Stephen Clements of Gardiner Mines. Henk Niesten of Millville won the sportsman division, while Aaron Rideout of Glace Bay came in second place, and Jacob Starzyczny of Dominion finished in third place.

Connor Brown of New Waterford captured first place in the junior dragster division, while Zeph Bellows of East Bay was in second place, and Sophia Christiansen on Dominion was in third period. In the bike/sled division, Wayne Morris of Westville, N.S., won the class, while Paul Metcalfe of Dominion and Stuart Ferguson of Bedford rounded out the top three. The super pro class was won by L. Wrathall of Sydney, while Silas Bellows of East Bay was in second place, and Gavin Pozzebon of Gardiner Mines rounded out the top three finishes.

On Saturday, Silas Bellows won the box gamblers event, followed by Brennan Curtis of Grand Mira North, and Keigan Moore of Sydney. In the no box gamblers, Glen Cooke took home top honours, while Kent MacLeod of Gabarus Lake was in second place, and Karen Bellows of East Bay was in third place. Wayne Morris won the bike/sled gamblers, while Kevin King of Glace Bay was the second-place finisher in the competition.

The junior dragster shootout winner was Jacey Pozzebon on Gardiner Mines, while Casey McKelvie of Nine Mile River, N.S., was in second place, and Ben Pearson of Cornwall, P.E.I., came in third place. The Big Rig Show-N-Go Low ET winner was Danny Thomas of Sydney, while Lawrence Dickeson of New Glasgow was the people’s choice award winner for the day. The drag racing season will continue Aug. 13-16 when the National Hot Rod Association rolls onto the island for competition at Cape Breton Dragway.
