Lightning-caused wildfire burning north of Six Mile Recreation Area

An out-of-control wildfire is burning four kilometres north of the Six Mile Recreation Area, 35 km north of Nelson in the western edge of the Nelson Range that borders the Slocan Valley.

The lightning-caused wildfire is eight hectares in size — located near Mineral Creek — and was sparked Wednesday night after a thunderstorm swept through the region. There are no current area restrictions near this incident and it is well away from human settlement on either side of the mountain range.

No resources have been allocated to the fire despite being one of the larger fires that started Wednesday night, likely because of its remote location and difficult terrain. Around 1.5 km away to the south of the Mineral Creek fire, a .01-ha. wildfire near Crusader Creek — also lightning caused — is during. “An initial attack crew is responding to this wildfire,” noted the B.C. Wildfire Service in its update.

Around six kilometres east of the West Arm Provincial Park, a .1-hectare wildfire is burning near Wilson Creek, one-and-a-half kilometres west of the shore of Kootenay Lake. The fire is lightning caused, with an initial attack crew responding to this wildfire. Across the West Kootenay and the Lower Arrow Lake a .8-hectare wildfire is burning, one kilometre north of Highway 6 and nine kilometres northwest of Needles.
