Letters: Does Edmonton city council really need to attend Stampede?

Article content I see the Edmonton City Council are at it again. They voted themselves a $12,000 allowance for 2026 for four councilors and their staff to attend the Calgary Stampede. They boosted it up from $7,000 to $12,000 to make sure I guess that they all have a good time.

Guess who is paying for it? Edmonton taxpayers. There is absolutely no reason for them to attend the Calgary Stampede to do what?

Talk to other politicians and have a good time on taxpayers’ money. Yet this is the same council that cannot look after potholes in our roadways, but they will make sure to raise our taxes again to pay for items like the Calgary Stampede. We have all the hogs in the hog trough at Edmonton City Hall.

Too much opinion I struggle with how subjective reporting the news has become. Maybe it’s the internet with newspapers competing with podcasts, Fox News etc. The result is a biased, anger-laden diatribe of vacuous vitriol.

Consider that most of the paper these days is filled with commentary, columnists who rail away with no obligation to be fair or even factual. Not quite Alex Jones but close. The Edmonton Sun is in full step with this kind of reporting, columnists like Gunter and Lilley who are constantly beating down Carney or anything remotely liberal.
