To the Editor, I am a proud American veteran and look forward to our country celebrating our 250th anniversary of our independence. Our national flag, the Stars and Stripes, has always moved me with pride when I see it anywhere in the world. As I drive around Dekalb County I have noticed many tattered and torn flags.

Some adorn businesses or homes, and some are very large (garrison size). The U.S. Flag Code [4 U.S. Code §§ 1-10] was adopted in 1942. While only a civilian advisory (no federal penalties), it is meant to set the standard for respect for our flag.

The key point is that it should be kept clean and in good repair. When no longer fit for display it should be replaced and retired with an appropriate flag retirement ceremony provided free by the VFW, American Legion and the Boy Scouts. They should never be thrown in the trash.

So, as we all prepare for this great event, let’s look outside at our home or business flags, replace those that are damaged, and fly a proper flag proudly. Happy semiquincentennial or 250th! Paul Stromborg, MD Sycamore
