Record Staff (HB) An 18-year-old man was arrested and later charged with murder following a violent family dispute that resulted in the death of his 41-year-old mother on July 9 in Sherbrooke. According to a press release from the Sherbrooke Police Service (SPS), around 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, a resident of rue Laiterie contacted the SPS to report an argument at a neighbour’s home at 1846 Laiterie Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a seriously injured woman inside the residence and arrested an 18-year-old man.

Paramedics were called to the scene. The victim, a 41-year-old woman, was quickly transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A young girl at the scene also sustained an arm injury.

She was transported to hospital but her life is not in danger. Following the incident, patrol officers, investigators, and forensic technicians were deployed to interview witnesses, secure the scene, and begin an investigation. According to information gathered so far, the suspect, 18-year-old Ramish Ataye, allegedly fatally injured his mother with a blunt object inside the family home.

The Police Department confirmed that no other suspects are being sought in connection with this case. Consequently, the public need not fear for their safety in relation to this incident. This is the first homicide of the year within the Sherbrooke Police Department’s jurisdiction.
