FedDev Ontario investment for Huys Industries Ltd. to help develop and commercialize AI-driven technology As a leading hub for artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, the Greater Toronto Area is seeing more businesses across key sectors adopt advanced technologies to boost productivity and bring new solutions to market. The Government of Canada is supporting these efforts through targeted investments in homegrown AI innovations that help businesses grow and strengthen their competitive advantage. Today, the Honourable John Zerucelli, Secretary of State (Labour) and Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North, on behalf of the Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced an investment, through the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative, for Huys Industries Ltd. to develop and commercialize an AI-powered welding system.

The company is undertaking a more than $1.3 million project, and FedDev Ontario is pleased to be providing nearly $660,000 towards it. Through this project, the company will integrate AI into its existing electric spark deposition welding system, used for coating and repairing metallic components. This AI-driven manufacturing solution will help reduce costs, improve efficiency, and expand market opportunities.

This project includes AI integration and validation of the advanced ESD system, as well as marketing activities to support its commercialization. The Government of Canada is committed to supporting businesses in adopting and advancing AI technologies, contributing to a more sustainable, future-forward economy and helping advance the objectives of Canada’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy, including increasing AI adoption among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the country. Quotes “Artificial intelligence is helping shape Canada’s economic future by transforming how businesses innovate and grow.

Across the country, companies are turning cutting-edge ideas into real-world impact —strengthening our economy, creating more opportunities, and positioning Canada for long-term success. These efforts reflect the broader vision of Canada’s Artificial Intelligence Strategy: AI for All, which aims to ensure businesses of all sizes – including SMEs – can benefit from the opportunities that AI creates.” The Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario “Our community is home to businesses that are embracing new technologies to grow and stay competitive.

By investing in innovation, we are helping local companies expand their capabilities, create good jobs, and contribute to a strong and resilient local economy. ” John Zerucelli, Secretary of State (Labour) and Member of Parliament for Etobicoke North “Huys Industries is excited to receive this funding from FedDev’s Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAII), as it ties exactly into our customers’ requests for intelligent automation, and dovetails precisely with Huys’ long-term strategy to be on the leading edge of manufacturing with its patented ESD technology.”

Hugh Scotchmer, President, Huys Industries Ltd. Quick Facts Incorporated in 1981, Huys Industries Ltd. is a supplier of resistive spot welding consumables and equipment. The company has diversified its operations to include the manufacturing of electric spark deposition welding equipment, used to coat and repair high-value metal components.

Canada’s regional development agencies are delivering the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAII). This funding is helping to bring new AI technologies to market and drive AI adoption by SMEs and sectors across the country. The Government of Canada’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, AI for All, includes a $500-million national investment to expand and enhance the RAII.

AI for All will help position Canada as a global leader in responsible AI while ensuring the benefits of this transformation are broadly shared. Since 2015, the Government of Canada, through FedDev Ontario, has invested nearly $480 million in projects related to the artificial intelligence sector.
