Watching the Conservative Party of Canada eat its own has become a Canadian political tradition, almost as reliable as a federal budget nobody reads. The latest round erupted after respected columnist Brian Lilley asked a pointed question: does Pierre Poilievre actually want to be prime minister? It’s worth asking, because the man keeps picking fights with the very people he needs.

At a Calgary Stampede event, Poilievre used his introduction of newly elected B.C. Conservative leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay to take a jab at Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s chief strategist, Kory Teneycke, whose candidate had just lost to Findlay. It was a cheap shot dressed up as a compliment, and it landed exactly as badly as you’d expect.
