Ottawa’s Carter Deveer claimed a great solo victory on Stage 2 of the Tour de l’Abitibi Glencore on Wednesday. The Canadian, who normally rides for the Bahrain Victorious junior squad, launched in the closing kilometres after surviving a day full of breakaways and counterattacks. Like fellow Ontario rider and Tour de l’Abitibi Femmes stage winner Elly Moore, Deveer comes from a cycling family.

Stage 2 of the Tour de l’Abitibi The 140-km stage from Amos to Rouyn-Noranda was spicy from the start, as is Abitibi tradition. Riders went for flyers almost immediately. An early three-rider move formed after 10 km before being joined by other riders.

The breaks changed constantly as the peloton tried to control the race (ultimately, in vain.) By the halfway point, five riders remained clear while a large chase group containing several pre-stage favourites steadily closed the gap. That pursuit finally came together with around 44 km remaining, producing a decisive 17-rider lead group.

Among those at the front were Deveer and Mederic Fortin, Simon Gaudreault, Antoine Desjardins and Leonard Mayrand, Kazakhstan’s Gleb Novikov and Danil Tretyakov, along with riders from New Zealand, PNW Racing and several other international teams. The leaders extended their advantage to nearly three minutes over the peloton. Along the way, Cor Sinke (PNW Racing) swept both intermediate sprints, while Joshua Davies (New Zealand) and Jake Mercado (Black Mixte) took the day’s King of the Mountain points.

The winning move As the race approached Rouyn-Noranda, things got quick. Deveer seized on a lull in the break, and took off, quickly opening a gap. The 17-year-old rider held off the chasing riders all the way to the finish to take a stellar win.
