Belleville cat lovers compete at CCA benefit show at Wally Dever Arena

Article content Cat lovers from across Quinte gathered for a ‘purr-fect” weekend show wrapping Sunday in Belleville to show off their prized furry felines. All manner of cat varieties were registered for the Canadian Cat Association sanctioned event in the Wally Dever Arena where seasoned judges from Canada and the United States examined the entries one by one. Recommended Videos Kathy Early, benefit show coordinator, travelled from Kitchener to organize the gathering to help committed cat owners gain credentials by the CCA for potential ribbon honours.

Early said “we have seven seven vendors, we’ve got 83 cats, so the owners, we consider them to be our exhibitors because they’re exhibiting their cats.” “There are four classes. There are the Kittens which are your pedigree cats from four to eight months of age, then you’ve got your Champions which are eight months and older,” Early said.

“And if they’re not those who mainly are breeding cats, if they’re not going to breed them, or they’re retired from breeding, they’re spayed or neutered, they go into the Premiership class. Then we have the Household pets.” Household pets, Early said, “are like barn rescues, they’re adopted for many societies, rescued cats off the streets and we do get some that are pedigrees, but they don’t meet the standard, so they might have a kink in the tail or the coat’s not right, there’s not a color that’s accepted, so they’ll go into household pets as well.”

“It’s mainly the rescues, but we do get a few purebreds in there that just don’t meet the standard, so can’t be shown as their breed.” One by one, owners placed their cats in their own waiting cage with a number on the housing before a judge removed them for examination on a table and awarded each with points. “Nice thing about household pets is the beauty contest, so they’re looking for nice and clean.
